My suggestions for learning spells that aren't in the vanilla spell list are these: Regardless, it shouldn't be as easy as just reading a book and letting time pass. Perhaps they may be rewarded by some holy boon or magic item that gives them another spell, but this should be avoided unless you had something really specific in mind. Leveling is how the Wizard is "learning" new spells. This is mainly for balance, but it also defeats the point of leveling. A failure would require great effort to learn the quest finding a particular scholar to translate the scroll, perhaps.įirstly, the Wizard probably shouldn't be allowed do just learn spells without leveling up or taking an advanced move. A partial might let the player learn the spell with some conditions, like spending a few days in study first. You could make up a move, so that there is an element of chance involved. Or, it might be impossible, if the spell is based on a different means of casting entirely. In other words, you might have to level up first. Or, if there are many different magic disciplines, learning a new spell might require a lot of practice and learning the new regime. Puzzling through them might require the player to solve a riddle, or to make some kind of move. If learning spells is that easy, wizards might well protect their secrets with riddles and cyphers. He still has to be high enough level to cast it, of course. Is learning a spell as easy as reading it from a book? If so, then the wizard can just add it to his spellbook.
